TRY AND TRY AND TRY
My last installment of The By and By @ Oxford American is called Try and Try and Try. Writing for OA is a true honor. Beautiful magazine, beautiful ppl. And this dreamy artwork is “The Weary Moon” by Edward Robert Hughes.
“I have a naturally buoyant personality, but as I write this, it is gray and cold and I am identifying far too closely with Solange singing about being weary of the ways of the world. But stubbornly, I’m identifying even more with her singing, I’m gonna look for my glory yeah. I’ll be back real soon, reminding me of Psalm 71:14, but as for me, I will always have hope. Hope for better translations, hope for this world, hope for quiet spaces, hope for light and pages turning. Hope and hope and hope for learning from our past. Hope for knowing the stark difference between when to speak up and when to listen.”

The Glimmering Hush: A Revolution
I listened to “Just Like You” by Keb’ Mo’ over and over again the same way I did when I was working at a coffee shop when I was in college. Keb’ is singing, “I feel just like you and I cry just like you and I heal just like you and I break down just like you,” and I’m wondering if people would actually live their lives differently if they listened to that song every morning before they went out into the world or interacted with other people. The realist in me knows this is absolutely not true, but my heart, I don’t know, thinks maybe it could change the world or something. Even the smallest mercies matter, the revolutions in miniature.
In this penultimate installment of my Oxford American The By and By column, I write abt Donnie Darko and revolutions in miniature. Read it here!
